Overview: Learn how to lead organizations and manage people in this course on leadership and management. The course offered in partnership with the University of Washington, Department of Global Health, focuses on the practical leadership and management skills required for working in complex local, regional, national and global health environments. By the end of this course, you will develop a clear sense of the issues and challenges associated with leading organizations and managing people. Personal leadership development and practical management skills are both emphasized.

This highly popular course has transformed the professional and personal lives of many participants. Leadership can be practiced at all levels, regardless of your role within an organization. You’ll have ample opportunities to reflect on and apply the leadership and management skills you gain, empowering you to make an impact in any setting.

Format: This online course has video lectures, readings, discussion forums, quizzes, and three assignments. KEMRI Graduate School will be offering this course, allowing participants to engage in in-depth discussions about course concepts and apply them to their local context and customs. This format fosters a collaborative atmosphere that encourages the exchange of diverse perspectives, enhancing the overall learning experience. The course is taught in English. Participants should be comfortable with written and spoken English.

Eligibility: The course is most useful for healthcare professionals and public health specialists with some experience in management who wish to enhance their skills in working with people and other organizational resources. However, the concepts in this course can be applied to other settings, as well. Most case studies, readings, and assignments assume an existing knowledge of the health care system, labor law, and funding landscape in your country

Site Meetings

KEMRI Graduate School will be hosting a site for this online course from 29th September 2025 to 7th December 2025. Discussion sessions are held virtually every two weeks on Thursday from 4pm to 5pm.

Course Fee:

KEMRI Graduate School is currently facilitating the course at a very subsidized fee of Ten Thousand Kenyan Shillings per individual.

As a participant, you will be able to:

  1. Have access to superb online Leadership and Management materials, including learning videos, audio, and articles
  2. Attend bi-weekly group discussions using Zoom and activities customized to our local setting.
  3. Network and learn from other Leaders and Managers in our health setting.
  4. Online interaction with UW faculty and participants from other sites around the world
  5. A University of Washington eCertificate in Leadership and Management in Health.
  6. Attain Membership in an Alumni Network of experienced experts.

You will be required to;

  1. First, create an account/ log in, and then be directed to submit your application.
  2. Once there, choose the course Leadership and Management in Health, select enrollment type as Site-Based Participant, and then select Kenya, Nairobi, KEMRI Graduate School as your preferred site for study.
  3. Click Next and fill in your details on the next page. Once you have filled in all the details,
  4. Click submit, and you will receive an email notification from the University of Washington confirming receipt of your application.

Making payment:

  1. Application Submission: Ensure your application to the University of Washington is submitted.
  2. Application Acceptance: Wait for confirmation that your application has been accepted by the University.
  3. Invoice Issuance: Upon acceptance, the KEMRI Graduate School will issue an invoice for the course fees.
  4. Payment Timeline: We encourage all participants to pay the course fees in full at the time of registration. If not paid upfront, ensure that payment is completed by the end of Week 1.
  5. For Organizational Payments: Participants whose fees are paid by their organizations must provide a Local Purchase Order (LPO) as a commitment for payment.
  6. Consequences of Non-Payment: Participants who do not pay by the end of Week 1 will be discontinued from the course, and the University of Washington will be informed, resulting in loss of access to course materials.
