Professor Elijah Songok, MBS, is an accomplished scientist, visionary leader, and the Director of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). With a career spanning over two decades in biomedical and public health research, he provides strategic oversight for Kenya’s premier health research institution, guiding its mission to improve human health and wellbeing through science, innovation, and partnerships.
Prof. Songok holds a PhD in Immunology/Virology and has built an extensive research portfolio focused on HIV pathogenesis, emerging infectious diseases, immunology, or molecular epidemiology. His work has contributed significantly to understanding disease mechanisms and informing public health policy in Kenya and the wider East African region.
Before his appointment as Director, he served in various leadership roles within KEMRI and the broader scientific community, including Director of KEMRI Graduate School.
In recognition of his distinguished service to science and public health, Prof. Songok was awarded the national honor of Member of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS) by the President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. William S. Ruto. Under his directorship, KEMRI continues to expand its role as a key player in global health research, fostering partnerships with organizations such as the WHO, CDC, and leading academic institutions worldwide.
Prof. Songok is committed to positioning KEMRI as a centre of excellence in transformative health research.
