Evidence-informed health care: An introduction to rapid synthesis of literature to support research-to-policy engagements
Decision making in health care is increasingly dependent on synthesized and summarized evidence from primary studies. Well conducted, up to date systematic reviews provide best evidence to answer healthcare questions and research synthesis has become a research discipline it is own right, with methods, and a body of scientific research underpinning the methods. Researchers, clinicians and public health policy makers can use findings from up to date robust reviews to inform their thinking. For researchers, this is an assessment of the gaps in research, and a rigorous sum of all relevant research to inform their research designs. For clinicians, this
Grant writing
The purpose of the GGW Workshop is to equip early career researchers with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to write competitive grant proposals and submit them for funding. The purpose of the ToT workshop is to equip GGW Workshop participants with the skills and attitudes that will enable them to write competitive grant proposals and build their profile as researchers.
Forensic serology and DNA analysis
The course covers current laboratory practices in forensic serology and DNA analysis. The training is highly hands on, and each trainee will learn to; independently conduct presumptive and confirmatory tests for body fluids, Extract, purify and quantify and assess the quality of DNA from a variety of body tissues, Perform PCR, Generate DNA profiles for family relationship testing, statistical interpretation of data, operation of various DNA analysis instruments, trouble shooting, quality control and assurance. In addition, the trainees are taken through the importance of chain of custody and the presentation of DNA evidence as expert witnesses.
Molecular diagnostics in clinical practice
The course covers theoretical and practical aspects of molecular diagnostics. Trainees are taken through; Introduction to qPCR-Detection technologies, Basic PCR, real-time PCR and digital PCR. Applications of qPCR, Comparison of qPCR vs traditional endpoint PCR, detection technologies (SYBR Green I, TaqMan,) Basic data analysis, Relative Quantification and Normalization and Reverse Transcription. Introduction to digital PCR, Comparison of qPCR vs Digital PCR, Digital PCR analysis and statistics, Digital PCR instruments, Digital PCR applications. The training will also have hand on lab training on detection of a range of clinically relevant pathogens using Real-Time PCR technologies. This includes; viruses, bacteria and parasites.
Application of Next-Generation Sequencing in Health Research
The course focuses on next generation sequencing technologies and the application in health research. The trainees are introduced to the various NGS sequencing platforms, advantages and disadvantages and limitations, whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing and targeted sequencing. The training is highly hands on and includes; library preparation, preparation of libraries for sequencing, instrument preparation for sequencing run and sequence data analysis.
Air Pollution, Energy, Climate Change and Health
Join us for a magnificent course where each participant will gain critical insights into the interplay between air pollution, energy, climate change, and public health in the African context. This course equips participants with the knowledge and tools needed to address pressing environmental and health challenges while promoting sustainable development.
Health Impact Assessment (HIA)
HIA is a systematic approach used to evaluate the potential health effects of a proposed policy, program, or project before it is implemented. It aims to inform decision-makers about the potential positive and negative health impacts and provides recommendations to maximize health benefits and minimize adverse effects. Learn how to evaluate health effects of policies, projects, and programmes. This course will equip you with the skills and the knowledge needed to make informed decisions for healthier communities.
Health Journalism and Public Health Communication
The course aims to empower journalists with the skillset to conduct accurate and well-balanced investigations into health-related stories. It will enable them to transform scientific and medical information into publishable stories that are comprehensible to the general public while being engaging and appealing.
Research Methodology
The short course training on research methodology and proposal writing is offered over a one-week period, and it aims to enable participants to formulate a research problem, develop a good research question, and draft a research proposal for funding consideration. Participants receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course.
